Proofreading is finding and correcting errors that were either missed or introduced during the editing phases.
- I will ensure that your document, manuscript, article, or web content is consistent in all mechanical matters such as spelling, capitalization, punctuation, hyphenation, abbreviations, format of lists, etc.
- I will look for errors in subject–verb agreement, improper word choices, typographical errors, and point out formatting issues.
- I will also ensure the document adheres to the chosen style guide.
Copy editing is the final edit after your manuscript has gone through the developmental/content phase. In addition to the above, as your copy editor, I will focus on:
- repetition and wordiness
- errors in grammar, syntax and usage
- clarification of terms likely to be new to readers
- query facual inconsistencies and any statements that seem incorrect
- note text, tables, or illustrations that may require permission to reprint
I will carefully guard your original voice, content, structure, and meaning.
If English isn’t your primary language, or there are other circumstances where heavier copy editing is needed, I’ll be glad to talk with you about how I can help.
